Clinical Military Counseling: Guidelines for Practice

The author outlines a holistic approach to working with the military in counseling settings that integrates current research and clinical practice guidelines for the medical, psychosocial, spiritual, psychological, vocational, career, family, and culture aspects of the military, including complementary and integrative health resources. He addresses the military culture from a multicultural perspective, including the cultural competence of counselors, societal myths, stereotypes, and stigma associated with US military culture, and counseling issues for women and other minorities in military life; medical and psychosocial aspects of military health, including the neuroscience of military stress and trauma, military suicide and co-occurring mental health conditions, psychosocial aspects of chronic illness and disability in veteran health, chronic pain and other medical conditions, and blast injuries and traumatic brain injury; and clinical issues, including spirituality, moral injury, and trauma, deployment cycle issues, career transitions, becoming a competent clinical military practitioner, complex military posttraumatic stress disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions, and military resiliency and integrative treatment strategies.
